Says " It's A Generation That Detests Regulation"
Nollylwood filmmaker and a Media Practinoner Fidelis Duker has spoken on the recent controversial physical battle between Peggy Ovire and Taiye Animoro
Fidelis Duker who just rounded up the Abuja international Film Festival and now in Dakar as a member of ECOWAS regional organising committee for ECOFEST 2025, described the ugly incident as a generation that detest regulation which is a sad reality
"The recent physical altercation between Peggy Ovire and Taiye Animoro during a film production, which led to the some stakeholders being injured, is more than a personal dispute. It is a symptom of a troubling disdain for structure within the industry. The intervention by the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Association of Movie Producers of Nigeria, and Actors Guild of Nigeria was not an overreach, but a necessary exercise of their mandate to uphold professionalism and safety.
It is therefore disheartening to witness some, particularly younger voices, condemn these guilds for their recommendations. This stance insults the veteran stakeholders who sat on three independent panels, reviewed evidence from all parties, and arrived at a considered resolution. To publicly denigrate the very industry you belong to is short-sighted and unethical, forgetting that its collective integrity is a shield all may need someday.
Much of the vocal support for Animoro seems less about admiration and more about a desire for an unregulated space. This romanticization of a lawless environment is dangerous; it is the precise condition that breeds the chaos we just witnessed. The united front of the guilds must be upheld, as it signals a commitment to accountability that benefits everyone.
Those arguing Animoro should avoid consequence due to non-membership miss the point. Fostering a culture of respect is a collective responsibility that transcends formal affiliation. My counsel is for the parties to focus on an amicable resolution, not a protracted legal battle championed by self-serving interlopers. While legal recourse exists, even courts prefer arbitration for such disputes. Both parties must meet to settle this constructively.
This incident is a critical teachable moment for Nollywood. It underscores the non-negotiable importance of clear contracts, professional boundaries, and respected regulatory bodies. The goal is not to stifle creativity, but to protect the individuals and the community that make it possible. Ultimately, a generation that detests regulation is one building its own chaos, forgetting that true creative freedom often thrives within a framework of mutual respect and order."
Fidelis Duker who is running anglophone longest Africa film festival, Abuja international Film Festival was recently honored and recognized alongside several Nollywood icons for their contributions to the industry by Artiste Managers Association of Nigeria (AMAN)
