FIDELIS DUKER
THE CANDIDATE OF THE NIGERIA DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS FOR AKPABUYO, BAKASSI & CALABAR SOUTH  FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY UNVEILED!
Fidelis Duker stands as one of the most consequential figures in the history of Nigerian cinema—a filmmaker, media mogul, cultural strategist, and broadcasting executive whose three-decade career has fundamentally shaped the contours of modern Nollywood.

With over 250 motion pictures to his credit, the founding of major broadcasting networks, and leadership roles in continental film bodies, Duker has left an indelible mark on Africa's creative economy. In May 2026, he formally entered the political arena, declaring his candidacy for the House of Representatives to represent the Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency in his home state of Cross River.

A native of Henshaw Town in Calabar, Duker's ancestry is deeply rooted in the Efik cultural tradition; he belongs to the Nsidung lineage of the Bakassi area and is a great-grandson of the first daughter of King Ekeng Ita. Though born in Lagos, he was raised largely in Northern Nigeria, where he completed his secondary education at Federal Government College, Kano. He would go on to earn both Ordinary and Higher National Diplomas in Mass Communication from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, followed by an MBA in International Business with Distinction from Crawford University in 2015 and an MSc in Mass Communication from the University of Cross River State in 2023. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree and his doctoral research centers heavily on the intersection of AI and mass media studies, specifically examining the disruptive and evolutionary impact of Artificial Intelligence on Newsrooms, digital content creation, and media regulation.

His international credentials are equally impressive, including certificates from the BBC TV Academy in Scotland, the Deutsche Welle Akademie in Berlin, UCLA's School of Law in copyright specialization, and Harvard University certificate in intellectual property management.

Duker's professional journey began  as a screen drama writer for the Nigerian Television Authority, where he also served as production manager on early programs like Morning Ride and Super Express show. In 1993, he founded FAD Media Productions, through which he wrote, produced, or directed hundreds of films that defined Nollywood's golden era—titles such as Not My Will, Blood Brothers, King of Money, London Blues, Nemesis, Monica Lewinsky and Senseless amingst others. His vision extended beyond the screen: in 2003, he launched the Abuja International Film Festival, which remains West Africa's longest-running independent film festival. In 2016, he expanded into broadcasting with FAD 93.1 FM Calabar, FAD FM 101.3 Abuja, and FAD 360 TV, establishing himself as one of the largest private employers of young creative talent in Cross River State. His institutional leadership includes serving as the first elected National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007, and he currently chairs the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Film Festival Association.

Beyond Nigeria, Duker has served as a tireless cultural ambassador. Elected and re-elected as Regional Secretary General for West Africa of the Federation of Pan African Filmmakers, he has provided strategic consultation to the governments of Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Botswana, helping restructure their domestic film industries. He has traveled to over 45 countries presenting academic papers and keynote addresses on Nollywood's economic architecture, and he has served on international juries and award academies advocating for African representation and stronger intellectual property frameworks. In 2024, he was invited by the Chinese government to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, where he worked to bridge the film and digital media ecosystems of Nigeria and China. At TICAD7 in Yokohama, Japan, in 2019, he addressed a global audience on the monetization and cross-continental appeal of Nigerian cinema and successfully pitched bilateral creative frameworks to Japanese investors, opening channels for technology transfer and festival funding.

His engagement with the global film community has been extensive. He is a regular presence at FESPACO in Burkina Faso, where in 2023 he served on the ECOWAS Special Prize Jury and received an international honor for two decades of service to pan-African cinema. He has been a featured presenter at Cannes, a consultant at the Durban International Film Festival, and a panelist at Zanzibar's film festival. In policy circles, he has contributed to Nigeria's National Film and Video Censors Board conferences, the Nigerian Entertainment Conference, and high-level assemblies on the sustainability of movie production in the digital era. Academically, he has delivered papers at Redeemer's University and partnered with organizations like HarvestPlus to explore media's role in nutritional advocacy. His influence extends to regional development forums, including the Abuja Business and Investment Summit and the "Recalibrate" National Youth Summit in Calabar, where he addressed youth development and creative resilience.

Duker's work within ECOWAS has been equally significant. He served on the regional steering committee for the inaugural ECOFEST and has campaigned tirelessly to dismantle cross-border distribution bottlenecks, advocating for unified intellectual property enforcement across West Africa. His efforts have positioned Nollywood within transnational trade and policy development networks, ensuring that Nigerian films can monetize seamlessly across both Francophone and Anglophone territories.

Over the years, Duker's contributions have earned him numerous prestigious accolades. In 2016, he received the Best of Nollywood Lifetime Achievement Award, which he dedicated to his late mother, who had provided the initial ₦3,000 to launch his career in 1989. In 2022, he was honored by the Federation of Burkina Faso Filmmakers at FESPACO, and in 2025, he received the AMAN Nollywood Veteran Honor. His broadcasting network has also been recognized, with FAD 93.1 FM Calabar winning at the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards in 2021 for its quality programming and reliable news coverage.
